Second Annual Gathering

October 2, 2019
Concordia University, Montreal

Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq/ Pijariuqsarniq Project’s second Annual Gathering began on October 2, 2019 at Concordia University in Montreal, Québec. Generously hosted by the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, the full day of events preceded the 21st Inuit Studies Conference, also taking place in Montreal, at UQAM.

The gathering brought together partners, collaborators, mentors and Ilinniaqtuit from across Canada and the Arctic. Focusing on professional development and mentorship, the first day included a lecture from Mentor and co-applicant Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, a VR demo from special guest Robert Beauchemin of Knowledge One, a CV and bio writing workshop for Ilinniaqtuit led by Dr. Heather Igloliorte and Dr. Carla Taunton, as well as a panel discussion with cultural sector professionals Stephen Borys (WAG), Serena Keshavjee (UofW), Michelle Lavallee (INAC), Alysa Procida (IAF), and Ryan Rice (OCAD), moderated by Ilinniaqtuk Nakasuk Alariaq.

The entire Inuit Futures team participated in the 21st Inuit Studies Conference, where many of our members presented in various panels and keynotes speeches. The team also took time to participate in a special closed workshop led by sisters Veronica and Vanessa Flowers, learning to make their own Labrador Inuit Slippers from elk hide, rabbit fur and sealskin.
